Sue Orlaske is from southwestern Michigan and has lived in Oregon since 1977. She has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biology. She has worked in art - drawing, pen & ink, photography, and watercolors - since her youth, and has taken many classes and workshops in clay. More recently she has been also working in oils, and she is mentored by skilled painters in regular work sessions. She is largely self-taught in all media she has tried. Most of Orlaske’s current clay work focuses on hand-built vessels which are salt-fumed in a low-fired sagger. Her themes often include abstract and representational natural elements in landscapes. Currently, Orlaske's 2-dimensional work features landscapes in oil and watercolor media. She also produces limited-edition archival prints and notecards of her two-dimensional work. She is a member of the Oregon Potters Association and participates in its annual spring Ceramics Showcase in Portland. She participates in regional art shows and fairs where she has received many awards.
